:: Broadening pupils' language: teaching vocabulary to improve reading and writing outcomes ::
Outline
NQTs will be enhancing their skills as English practitioners this term. This course offers participants the opportunity to reflect on the importance that a rich and varied vocabulary has on a pupil's ability to make academic progress. Enriching and extending pupils' vocabulary opens doors to increasingly complex texts, supports reading to learn, and reaps benefits across the curriculum. Delegates will develop strategies to decide which words to teach and why, design programmes of vocabulary instruction that better support understanding and retention, embedding this across the curriculum. This course is also suitable for early career teachers, overseas-trained teachers, those returning to teaching or moving key stage, and more experienced practitioners.
Outcomes:
By attending the course, participants will have:
  • learn how to design programmes of vocabulary instruction that support better understanding and retention
  • further develop understanding of the crucial role that vocabulary knowledge has on the path to achieving success in reading at the end of KS1 and KS2
  • consider how to embed vocabulary across the curriculum
Suitable for:
  • Classroom Teachers
  • Early Career Teachers
  • Newly Qualified Teachers
  • Teaching Assistants
