:: Year 5 and 6 spelling: the fine detail and application ::
Outline
This course is aimed at Year 5 and 6 teachers who require training in the age-related expectations for spelling at upper Key Stage 2. The National Curriculum now has an increased emphasis on spelling. This course has been designed to up-skill teachers in delivering effective teaching of spelling. During the day delegates will have the opportunity to explore the Year 5 and 6 programme in detail, which will include coverage of phonemic, morphological and etymological subject knowledge. Delegates will be able to consider ways in which they can incorporate these into the teaching of spelling within their phase.
Outcomes:
By attending the course participants will:
  • improve their subject knowledge and understanding of progression in spelling
  • gain confidence in teaching spelling at whole class level
  • develop expertise in assessment, teaching, marking and feedback
  • develop a repertoire of strategies for teaching the statements in the national curriculum
  • support their pupils to become increasingly independent spellers
