:: School business manager professional development programme (SBM PDP) module 4: working with difficult and/or challenging people ::
The SBM PDP will explore and examine a range of professional development skills, which link to the NASBM behaviours of resilient, decision maker, collaborative, challenger, change catalyst, skilled negotiator. This is a programme of four modules, which will provide an opportunity for participants to build upon the professional skills required in order to be effective in their role and to network with colleagues in similar roles. These modules are complementary when attended together, but individual modules can be attended. The fourth module will provide an opportunity to consider and explore effective means of dealing with challenging people and situations within the working environment.
Delegates who attend the whole programme (all four modules) will keep and maintain a diary throughout the year providing an opportunity to reflect upon the way that they use the skills that they learn and the impact that this has on the way that they work.
By attending the course, participants will:
  • understand why conflict can occur and the roles of those in situations of conflict, using transactional analysis techniques
  • know the steps to take when faced with challenging behaviour and situations
  • explore and practise ways of preparing and framing conversations when they have advance warning
