:: MFL Conference - Policy to Practice: Time to Bacc Languages? ::

This new one-day conference is for headteachers, senior leaders and subject leaders of languages who wish to widen participation and improve outcomes in languages at Key Stage 4, to equip their students with the linguistic and intercultural competencies to prepare them for a global future. Our speakers for the day will include Professor Suzanne Graham, Professor of Language and Education, The University of Reading, John Rolfe MBE, Schools Outreach Manager, British Council, Professor Ludovica Serratrice, Professor of Bi-Multilingualism, The University of Reading, Suzanne O’Farrell, ASCL Curriculum and Assessment Specialist and a representative from the EBacc Team, Curriculum Division, Department for Education. The conference will look at various issues around language learning including discussions on language curriculum choices and design, harnessing the skills of SEND and EAL students, developing students' global outlook, alternatives to GCSE and more. This will be a high-profile event to support school leaders in taking their language provision to the next stage, subject leaders in developing the curriculum and promoting wider participation at Key Stages 4 and students in getting the most from languages in school to enhance their future lives.
Outcomes:
The aims of the conference are to:
  • examine the issues and challenges around the government's Ebacc targets
  • look at how language departments can work towards these targets while securing good outcomes
  • contribute to student social mobility through access to languages and the development of cultural agility
