:: Enabling teaching assistants to support and develop independent learning in mathematics - St Albans (morning session) ::
Outline
Many pupils find it difficult to work independently in mathematics. Teaching assistants (TAs) can make a real difference to improve this. This brand-new, two-hour practical session will support TAs to develop pupils’ independence in mathematics. Delegates will leave with a range of practical strategies that they can use to develop independence for pupils who struggle to : - access the learning without adult support - sustain their focus when asked to think for themselves - get “unstuck” and give up easily The local cluster training is repeated in morning and afternoon sessions so as many TAs as possible can benefit.
Outcomes:
By attending the session, participants will:
  • develop strategies that can be used to support independent mathematical learning every day
  • explore approaches to support pupils who struggle to access the learning without adult support
  • develop ways to help pupils sustain their focus when asked to think for themselves
  • explore how to use effective scaffolding and when to fade this out
Suitable for:
