:: The reasoning rich classroom in Upper Key Stage 2 ::
How can pupils be taught the skills to justify, connect, evaluate and generalise to deepen their understanding? How is reasoning and sense-making achieved as part of our everyday mathematical classrooms? This practical course will support Year 5 and Year 6 teachers to develop a wealth of adaptable activities that promote reasoning and sense-making matched to the curriculum expectations. Helping pupils develop their mathematical thinking through what they can say and what they can show is an important aspect of the reasoning aim. Attendees will explore how to develop crucial reasoning habits in their learners and how they can be exploited as valuable assessment opportunities. During the day, the key aspects of reasoning will be mapped out and opportunities to develop and embed these skills into pupils’ learning will be explored. Learners’ attitudes and the collaborative, mistake-friendly classroom that best supports these goals will also be considered.
The aim of the course is to:
  • define reasoning and identify the key skills and vocabulary that support this learning
  • develop a range of reasoning activities for the Upper Key Stage 2 classroom
