:: Reception Early Reading Project (ERP) ::
This hugely successful project is aimed at supporting schools in analysing historic ELG reading data and using this to fine-tune the teaching of early reading and phonics in order to close gaps for as many pupils as possible, as early on as possible, success in reading in the early years of school is linked to later reading fluency and comprehension. We know that children may experience barriers to reading for a range of reasons. Unpicking these, and matching provision to individual need, is integral to closing these gaps. Previous project schools have seen an improvement of their ELG reading by on average 4.6 percentage points compared to overall County change of -1.0. The largest increase seen was +13.3 percentage points, in a school with a high proportion of disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils. The project package includes high-quality training resources, observational assessment tools and the professional development outlined below. Schools benefit from the project in a range of ways, e.g. improving their ELG reading attainment in comparison to National, LA or their own previous data. During the project participants will be using tracking tools to support pace and progress and to explore matching provision to need. With their linked adviser, they will plan, carry out and review key actions for individual pupils and groups of pupils. The project will then support the delegates to embed strategies through robust action planning, ensuring future success and building sustainable improvements in provision. Following the launch day event a half-day consultancy visit will be arranged with an allocated adviser by the end of January 2019. One-form entry includes a project lead and one classroom teacher and two-form entry includes a project lead and two classroom teachers.
Schools will nominate a class teacher/s and an English subject leader / project lead to be present at the first and last training days, and at the in-school consultancy visit. Please note the project teacher must commit to being present at the mid-point twilight. Schools will be supported to select six Reception pupils who fit the following criteria: • are struggling to apply phonics and are reading below ARE • are eligible for PPG funding (where applicable). Identification of focus pupils should not be fully confirmed before the launch day; more information about suitable pupil choice will be given at the launch and on the tailored consultancy visit. However, delegates will need to bring current reading and phonic assessment data with them. Class teachers will be expected to commit to working with the identified focus group for 20 minutes, twice a week over a 12-week period. Class teachers will need to assess pupils at the beginning and end of the project using the materials provided.
By attending the event, participants will:
  • increase the proportion of children attaining ELG reading, including vulnerable groups
  • share tried and tested reading strategies in order to deliver precision teaching and close gaps early
  • improve children’s enjoyment, fluency and self-regulation when reading
  • develop whole-school systems for sustaining the gains
