:: Stretch and challenge for high-attaining pupils at Key Stage 1 ::
This course will support schools to tailor their curriculum to meet the needs of, and challenge, their more-able writers. It will cover the identification of children who, despite attaining well, are at risk of ‘falling behind’ (Ofsted 2015). Delegates will go on to explore a range of pedagogical approaches which will inspire and develop technical skills, individual voice and style. In Key Stage 1 rich source materials will be used to cultivate independent flexible approaches to writing allowing pupils to adapt texts. Through engagement with this course, delegates will consider how the exemplified approaches may be used to develop a writers’ culture in class that marries high expectations with high-quality outcomes for all.
Training is available in Key Stage 1 (morning) and Key Stage 2 (afternoon). Any delegates attending both sessions will receive lunch on the day.
By attending the course, participants will:
  • gain a deeper understanding of the needs of the more-able writers including some of the pitfalls that can later inhibit them
  • develop their understanding of specified approaches to adapt planning to increase pitch and challenge for more-able writers
  • improve their awareness of how to utilise high-quality texts to ensure high-quality writing outcomes
