:: Phase 1-2 phonics: teaching and supporting 'Letters and Sounds' ::
Outline
This course is ideal for anyone teaching or supporting pupils with early phonological awareness using Letters and Sounds. Hands-on exploration of rhythm, rhyme and all the phase 1 aspects will leave delegates feeling fully equipped to support any pupils at this stage of their phonic development. Delegates will also begin to explore transition to phase 2, when pupils start to use graphemes (letter shapes) for reading and writing. Throughout the course delegates will be looking at assessment, application and building in links to their continuous provision, including planning for adult-led learning.
Outcomes:
By attending the course, participants will:
  • develop their understanding of the relationship between language comprehension and literacy development
  • receive practical ideas for delivering phases 1 and 2
  • feel secure in assessing pupils' progress within phases 1 and 2
  • develop their understanding of age-related expectations regarding pace and progression in phonics teaching
