:: Teaching computing at Upper Key Stage 2 ::
Outline
This course is designed to support Upper Key Stage 2 (UKS2) teaching staff in delivering the 2014 computing curriculum in Years 5 and 6, with an emphasis on the computer science and programming aspects. It will enhance their understanding of computing and will support them in developing creative approaches to engage their pupils. For those teaching the Primary Computing Scheme, the course provides an input into the UKS2 section. During the morning, we will concentrate on the programming concepts and how to teach them, and in the afternoon we will provide an overview of other areas of the computing curriculum, involving digital literacy and information technology, including developing safe online practice. The course will cover: teaching programming concepts and building programming skills, including unplugged approaches and using Scratch and Logo; developing the use of spreadsheets; an overview of sound recording and editing using Audacity; understanding computer networks; exploring 3D graphical modelling; developing safe online practice.
Prerequisites
Delegates should bring a memory stick or portable hard drive so that they can save and take away the electronic resources provided.
Outcomes:
By attending the course, participants will:
  • develop their understanding of computing at UKS2
  • explore and develop useful resources to support the teaching of computing to pupils in Years 5 and 6
  • have hands-on experience with different software and hardware used to support the teaching of computing
  • explore computing resources and use technology in a creative and fun way
