:: Effectively supporting pupils in mathematics - local training for teaching assistants ::
Outline
Highly effective teaching assistants can add real value to children’s mathematical learning. As the Sutton Trust identified, investing in professional development for this group of practitioners makes the difference. This two-hour practical session will provide delegates with a range of strategies so that they can effectively support pupils to become independent learners in mathematics. Delegates will leave with a range of resources that they can immediately use in their classroom that will improve pupils’ talk and thinking. This half-day training is run in local clusters and the sessions are held both in the morning and afternoon to help as many teaching assistants as possible attend.
Outcomes:
By attending the course participants will:
  • develop purposeful questions to prompt pupils’ reasoning skills
  • enhance strategies to scaffold pupils’ responses
  • use mathematical models and resources effectively to deepen pupils’ learning
  • take away a range of resources to immediately use to support pupils
