:: Mathematics: providing effective challenge through breadth and depth in Key Stage 2 ::

Are you looking for new ideas and strategies to challenge your pupils without accelerating through the curriculum? Are you grappling with what is meant by ‘breadth and depth’ in mathematics? This one-day course will support Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 teachers to deepen and extend their pupils’ learning. During the session, delegates will explore effective pedagogy and progression in the key concepts, skills and knowledge in Key Stage 2 mathematics. Teachers will return to the classroom armed with a range of practical strategies to enhance the learning opportunities that deepen and broaden pupils' thinking. Delegates will also explore resources and ideas to offer pupils ‘rich and sophisticated problems’.
Outcomes:
By attending the course participants will:
  • enhance the range of teaching strategies used to secure, deepen and broaden learning in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
  • develop learning opportunities that deepen pupils' thinking, reasoning and problem-solving
  • identify the progression and development of learning in key aspects of mathematics
  • understand what this learning looks like and ways to help pupils effectively show what they can do
