:: Teaching for independence in Key Stage 1 ::
‘A lot of people never use their initiative because no-one told them to...’ - Banksy Independent learners are active and curious, they ask good questions, support others, set goals for themselves, understand how well they are doing and have a go... knowing that taking risks and exploring, making mistakes and 'being stuck' are all part of learning. We know the importance of actively teaching learning behaviours to pupils in order to positively impact on their achievement in Key Stage 1 and beyond. We want to encourage them to explore alternatives, possibilities and choices, to organise and investigate. Young children do not become independent learners by themselves; we need to teach them how by catching habits early - when they are easier to change. By attending this course delegates will have an opportunity to focus on the key skills, habits and attitudes which teachers and pupils require for independent learning to take place. Delegates will explore how to develop opportunities and experiences within the revised English and mathematics curriculum, in order to build learner motivation, curiosity, self-confidence and self-reliance.
By attending the course participants will:
  • explore what it means to be an independent learner in Key Stage 1
  • identify essential learning skills and habits you can promote through direct teaching in literacy and mathematics
  • reflect on your teaching environment and explore how making a few changes can develop independent learners
  • gain awareness of effective research based methods in order to structure your teaching approaches in literacy and mathematics
  • build your personal toolkit of teaching strategies for promoting independent learning in literacy, mathematics and beyond
Suitable for:
