:: Guided reading at Key Stage 2: developing thinking readers ::
Outline
This course supports you in delivering effective guided reading to children that are meeting the age related expectations for the end of KS1 and upwards, when the emphasis of guided reading sessions will shift from learning to read to embedding comprehension skills. The session will develop your understanding of the core elements of effective guided reading focusing particularly on text selection, developing key reading strategies, objective driven learning, encouraging response and reflection. The course will also address other key issues including making assessment meaningful and manageable, developing 'reading for pleasure' through the guided reading carousel and guided reading for the more able.
Prerequisites
Please note that this course is not suitable to delegates who have previously attended 'Progression in guided reading: from level 3 to level 6'.
Outcomes:
The aim of the course is to:
  • explore the revised expectations for reading within the National Curriculum
  • explore examples of guided reading practice at a range of ability levels
  • review the principles of effective guided reading
  • further your understanding of pitch, pace and progression
  • support you in addressing the practicalities of working guided reading into a busy classroom schedule
