Outline
This course is ideal for English leaders wanting to review and refresh their school's approach to the teaching of reading to develop phonics and reading comprehension. We will exemplify approaches to teaching reading from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2 in line with the National Curriculum. Delegates will explore the importance of consistent approaches across the school in addressing the needs of differing ability ranges. There will be opportunities to explore the how the structure of guided reading sessions may change across key stages and varied approaches to teaching knowledge and skills. Practical ideas for teaching the specific skills that need to be taught to develop reading comprehension will be shared.
Outcomes:
By attending the course participants will:
  • look at models of how children learn to read and what this means in terms of provision within a rich and varied reading curriculum
  • develop an understanding of the importance of developing comprehension skills concurrently with decoding from EYFS onwards
  • look at a range of approaches to guided reading
