:: Unplugged computing - teaching primary computer science concepts without computers ::
In the 2014 primary computing curriculum pupils are required to learn the basics of programming and other computer science concepts. Whilst of course using computers is an essential part of this, many of the core concepts specified within the curriculum can be introduced, often more effectively, without the use of technology. By working away from computers, pupils can develop a deeper understanding of the computer science concepts that can then be applied through using technology and programming environments. For those following the Primary Computing Scheme, the content will be relevant to several of the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 learning themes. During the course we will cover: - unplugged approaches to teaching some of the computer science concepts in the primary computing programmes of study, including decomposition, abstraction, selection and variables - ideas for activities where pupils create and debug algorithms - developing pupils' computational thinking skills without the use of computers - ways of modelling how networks and search engines work
Please bring a USB stick to this session - you will want to take away some of the resources you explore.
By attending the course participants will:
  • develop their own understanding of key computing concepts found within the primary computing curriculum
  • explore and develop useful resources to support the teaching of computing at KS1 and KS2
  • come away with a variety of ideas for teaching computer science concepts without using computers
Please bring a USB stick to this session - you will want to take away some of the resources you explore.
Suitable for:
  • Classroom Teachers
  • Teaching Assistants
