This course is specifically for all governors of academies and free schools only, and particularly new governors and those on the Finance Committee for academies and free schools.

This session provides governors with an overview of the roles and responsibilities that governors have in respect of strategic financial management of academies, and information on how to manage key aspects of those responsibilities.

Outcomes

By the end of this training session governors will have:
  • an understanding of the role of the governing board in strategic financial management
  • improved understanding of the role of governors in the evaluation of value for money, best value and the use of resources
  • improved understanding of financial reporting responsibilites
  • improved understanding of financial governance and control.

Outline

Governors will:
  • examine key elements of financial management
  • examine the budget setting process and the importance of medium term planning
  • examine the elements of good financial governance and control.
