Outline
This course will explore how to embed Assessment for Learning within science lessons, to provide teachers with opportunities to judge pupils' ongoing progress in knowledge and skills. During the day there will be opportunities to develop learning intentions, success criteria and higher-order questioning, with a particular focus on working scientifically. In order to do this, it would be helpful for delegates to bring the next topic they will be covering. There will be a chance to look at pupils' work, and discuss how to make judgements about progress and provide feedback. Delegates are asked to bring a sample of topic work from two pupils to help with this teacher assessment.
Outcomes:
By attending the course, participants will:
  • have an increased awareness of how to use Assessment for Learning within lessons and how to use questioning effectively in the classroom to promote higher-order thinking
  • have confidence with marking written outcomes to scientific work and providing effective feedback
  • experience making judgements about a pupil’s progress, using written evidence
  • have confidence in highlighting misconceptions and identifying pupils who may be falling behind
  • have an increased awareness of creative assessment strategies that provide pupils with different opportunities to demonstrate their learning
