:: Developing progression and excellence in primary geography map skills and fieldwork ::
Outline
This course has been designed to support the implementation of the "geography skills and fieldwork" sections of the national curriculum, as well as address some of the common weaknesses in this aspect of primary geography. The course will include examples of what progression in map skills look like, and a bank of 60 ideas to illustrate the potential of the school grounds and surrounding local area, for a range of human and physical geography fieldwork. The course will also cover the use of OS maps and aerial photographs to support pupils' confidence and ability to communicate geographical descriptions and explanations of contrasting landscapes.
Outcomes:
By attending the course, participants will:
gain confidence in understanding what progression in primary geography map skills and fieldwork look like, across KS1-KS2
be better informed to give guidance to each year group on possible geographical enquiries and practical activities, and help establish effective fieldwork and out-of-classroom learning opportunities, using the school grounds and local area
review a range of resources, strategies and practical activities, which enable pupils to develop their geographical skills over time
